This week is the first week that I am participating in the 20 Something Bloggers weekly prompt.
The topic: What three books summarize you as a person?
An interesting prompt to say the least, and since I am somewhat of a bookworm (even though I don't blog about it), I thought I'd take this opportunity to share with you the books that have helped shape who I am today.
1. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
My favorite author. My favorite book. My favorite movie. It's got some great lessons and the romance, in my opinion, is unbelievably swoon worthy. The relationship between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet has helped me learn to look past social opinions to be able form my own and not be afraid to voice those opinions no matter what others may think or say about me. Standing your ground for what you believe in is probably one of the most courageous things someone can do. I love the writing style Austen, and authors of her time, use and I wish people still spoke as eloquently as they did a couple 100 years ago.
2. The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
Yes, this is seven books, but the core message is the same throughout: Love is the greatest and most powerful magic in the world. The friendship between Harry, Ron, and Hermione proves just that; they stuck together (mostly. To be fair, Ron did come back though) even when things got complicated and hard. It displays and honors a level of loyalty that I try practice with my own relationships, both romantic and platonic. Additionally, the series represents and was the gateway to my affinity for the fantasy genre.
3. Oh The Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss
I bet you didn't know it, but Dr. Seuss books are not only for children. A lot of them hold serious messages and advice that we, as adults, need to hear as well. This is one of those books. It doesn't candy coat what your future can be, but it doesn't scare you into not wanting to pursue your dreams. Straightforward, real, and you can't beat the colorful pictures. I think everyone should read (or listen to it below) Oh the Places You'll Go! because it inspires you to keep going even when it doesn't seem like you're getting anywhere.
