TBT: The House That Built Me

PIM #TBT Stories

The first place I remember living in was a two bedroom apartment in Norcross, GA. But the majority of my childhood took place in a pretty blue house in the next town over. I was about 5 or 6 when we moved in and I was finally going to have my own room! I got to pick my paint color and everything! I chose pink of course, and my brother chose blue. I wish I had pictures of my bedroom, but sadly I could not find any.

I lived here until I was 13. My room was the window on the top far right. So many memories were made within and around this house: I learned to ride a bike on that driveway. I taught myself to play the flute on the living room floor. I spent hours reading V.C. Andrews books in my papasan chair in the corner of my room. My youngest brother, F, was born while we lived here. My mom told us ghost stories from out front porch swing.  I climbed trees, learned how to apply make-up, taught F to walk, and had picnics on our back deck.

I did a google maps street view search. It looks like our climbing tree is gone as is the apple tree. The whole yard looks completely different, but the house is still that lovely shade of light blue. Unfortunately the last time I drove through the neighborhood, it looked pretty run down and sketchy. It's sad to see my childhood stomping grounds turn into a junk pile with overgrown yards. Sometimes I wonder if I knocked on the door and told them who I was, would they let me in to look around. More likely they will slam the door in my face and call the cops. Maybe one day, I'll try.

Where did you grow up? Do your parents still live there? Is the community the same?

Next week on TBT: Graduations!! Kindergarten. Middle School. High School. College. Pick one (or more!) and tell me all about it!

The Grits Blog

Apparently every. single. link-up. tool. I could find is now charging a yearly rate to use them. And since I don't make enough money off this blog (yet) to cover those charges, I can't offer you a link up list to add too. But feel free to leave your links in the comments!

  1. I get so nostalgic about my childhood home! Lived there from age 5-21. Luckily, one of my good friends cousin bought it!
